2018, São Paulo. Trois adolescents paumés, surexcités par le discours du président en devenir, agressent un homosexuel et lui gravent au couteau, sur le torse, le V de la victoire et une croix gammée.
2003. Les inspecteurs Mario Leme et Ricardo Lisboa, de la police civile, enquêtent sur la mort du directeur de la British School. Leur hiérarchie souhaite une conclusion rapide : un cambriolage qui aurait mal tourné sera la version officielle. La police militaire prend le relais, fait une descente dans une favela et arrête un coupable bien commode.
C’est là le début d’une incroyable fresque sociopolicière à laquelle participent une myriade de personnages : un ex-agent de la CIA chargé de blanchir de l’argent, un enfant des rues qui gravit les échelons d’une organisation mafieuse, l’assistante de la maire de gauche et bien d’autres. Tous ces destins sont liés et chacune des intrigues qui irriguent le roman dessine au final un tableau du Brésil dantesque et vertigineux.
Mêlant fiction et réalité, Joe Thomas réussit un tour de force scénaristique et romanesque dans ce roman noir dense et hypnotique.
